While the fourth film in the rebooted “Star Trek” film franchise has seemingly disappeared into a black hole, the franchise is going very well on TV with CBS All Access and Netflix’s “Star Trek: Discovery” which launches its second season next week.

Conducting an extensive interview with The Live Feed, showrunner and the franchise’s current overseer Alex Kurtzman has confirmed that not one but two animated series set in the “Star Trek” universe in the works.

One will be the already announced comedic “Lower Decks” series from “Rick and Morty” writer Mike McMahan, that one dealing with the hapless support staff aboard a low-key Starfleet vessel. Kurtzman tells the trade the other will be kids-focused with an entirely different perspective and an entirely different tone. Kurtzman also confirmed that two more “Star Trek: Short Treks” minisodes are in the works, and both of these will be animated rather than live-action like the others.

Talk then turned towards the new Jean-Luc Picard series with Patrick Stewart reprising his iconic role fifteen years later. Events will be set after both the failed coup of Romulus by Shinzon (Tom Hardy) in “Star Trek: Nemesis” and that planet’s destruction as mentioned in 2009’s “Star Trek”. In the time since, Kurtzman says: “Picard’s life was radically altered by the dissolution of the Romulan Empire”.

He goes on to say Picard is leading a whole new life in the new episodes, and Patrick Stewart only agreed to return to the role if they were going to do something drastically different:

“He threw down an amazing gauntlet and said, ‘If we do this, I want it to be so different, I want it to be both what people remember but also not what they’re expecting at all, otherwise why do it?'”
[/i]

Kurtzman was asked to put together a three-page document outlining his ideas for the potential series, but the treatment ultimately went for 34 pages and Stewart liked what he read:

“He walked into the room and he had a huge smile on his face and said, ‘This is wonderful.’ What he understood at that point … was that he was with people who desperately wanted to collaborate with him; that we weren’t trying to exploit him. He knew if he was going to go back to Picard, it needed to be for the greatest reason ever.”

The thought of Patrick Stewart returning to play Jean-Luc Picard in a new Star Trek series, over fifteen years after he last played the role, is quite exciting, especially as it will find the character in a "different time and place" of his life. While speaking with THR, Alex Kurtzman went one step further, saying that the new series will find Picard leading a radically altered life.

Why is that exactly? Well, Kurtzman also dropped a big clue about the premise of the new series, saying that "Picard's life was radically altered by the dissolution of the Romulan Empire." Now, if you're not down on your Star Trek lore, here's a rundown on what that means. In J.J. Abrams' STAR TREK, we learned that a supernova was threatening to destroy Romulus, the Romulan homeworld, which prompted Ambassador Spock (Leonard Nimoy) to attempt to save the world using red matter. Unfortunately, Spock was too late and Romulus was destroyed and both Spock and Nero (Eric Bana) were sent back in time leading to the creation of the Kelvin timeline. The regular Star Trek timeline which we've known for the past fifty years continued on, and it appears that the Picard series will be dealing with the aftermath of that cataclysmic event.

Many details about CBS All Access’ upcoming “Star Trek” spin-off series, the one featuring the return of Patrick Stewart as Captain Jean-Luc Picard, remain unknown.

We do know the ten-episode first season is apparently set around the year 2389, a decade after the events of “Star Trek: Nemesis” and twenty years after the end of “Star Trek: The Next Generation”.

Now some more details have emerged via That Hashtag Show which seem to confirm talk that Picard is the only character from the old series that will return for this.

The site reveals that the story is indeed set in the Prime Timeline with the destruction of Romulus two years earlier by a supernova and the subsequent collapse of the Romulan Empire weighing heavily on Picard as he had been closely involved with building a bond between Starfleet’s former enemies and the Federation.

There are also reportedly seven other key characters in the mix:

– Connie. Early 30s African-American woman. Mercenary pilot and widow with a bounty on her head.
– Lawrence. Early 30s man. A thief with a dodgy moral compass, and Picard’s pilot for a mission.
– Starton. Early 30s man. A positronic brain specialist terrified of space travel.
– Dr. Smith. Holographic crewman. Programmed to avoid becoming too self-aware.
– K’Bar. Late teenage male Romulan martial artist extremely devoted to Picard.
– Indira. Early 20s woman. Smart, agile but socially inept and immature.
– Alana. 40s-50s woman. Former intelligence officer – analytical, paranoid, substance abuser.

The site suggests the story will play up into Picard’s love of archaeology with a mission to revolve around some sort of alien artifact that’s been discovered. Production is reportedly set to begin sometime around mid-April with Hanelle Culpepper set to helm the first two episodes of the series.

Former “Heroes” and “Salvation” hunk Santiago Cabrera and “Blindspot” and “Ash Vs. Evil Dead” alum Michelle Hurd are set to co-star opposite Patrick Stewart in CBS All Access’ upcoming and currently untitled “Star Trek” spin-off series exploring the next chapter of former U.S.S. Enterprise Captain Jean-Luc Picard.

Stewart reprises his iconic role which he played for seven seasons on “Star Trek: Next Generation” and across four films. Character breakdowns leaked the other day and the new report seems to confirm them with Cabrera playing Lawrence, a skilled thief with a dodgy moral compass who serves as Picard’s pilot for a mission. Cabrera was in high demand for TV pilots, but reportedly turned them all down for this role.

Hurd will play Alana, an analytical former intelligence officer whose skill remains intact despite her long-term substance abuse problem. Alex Kurtzman, James Duff, Akiva Goldsman, Patrick Stewart, Michael Chabon, Heather Kadin, Rod Roddenberry and Trevor Roth executive produce the series.

Heard that before. Pošto ono... više bih da ne bude drugačije uopšte. Ali ne mogu da otresem taj osećaj da će biti jako loše. Jer imaju tog lika koji je svima bitan... ono, internet je pun Picard facepalm i WTF meme-ova. I to će automatski da ih tera da budu over the top u nekom segmentu.

Frakes je zadovoljan i STD-om. To mi nista ne znaci.

"U duhu TNG-a" malo toga znači. To je prepušteno individualnoj interpretaciji. Stewart i Frakes nisu iste osobe koji su bili 80-tih. Njihova procena može da bude totalno izopačena.
